Ambassador Laura Bird kicks off mammoth 31 marathon challenge to grant more wishes to seriously ill children

Woman stands by the sea, while wearing a yellow running vest which reads: Rays of SunshineWe are delighted to announce legendary fundraiser and Rays of Sunshine Ambassador Laura Bird has launched her next superhuman challenge to raise money to grant more magical wishes for seriously and terminally ill children in the UK.

Laura has challenged herself to complete 31 marathons in the 31 days of May 2026, with the aim of raising £31,000. It comes just two years since her last big fundraiser, in which she became the first woman ever to complete the London Marathon with a 25kg fridge on her back.

“I’m no stranger to an ‘out-there’ fundraising challenge,” says Laura, who has also completed Iron Woman competitions and appeared on Channel 4’s SAS Who Dares Wins. “But I really do believe what I’m doing is still no where near as brave as what the young people Rays of Sunshine supports do on a daily basis.

“Every time I struggle, I know I’ll find strength in the fact every mile is helping to put a bit of magic back into the lives of poorly children.

“All of my challenges are rooted in the idea of bringing people together and spreading a little joy, so I hope this one is no different,” Laura says. “I hope that we can create something really special, all while raising money to brighten the lives of families who need it most.”

Amy Chambers, CEO at Rays of Sunshine, says: “Laura continues to inspire us all with her extraordinary determination and heart.

“Her challenges capture the true spirit of Rays of Sunshine: finding joy, strength and togetherness even in the toughest circumstances.

“The funds and awareness she’s raising will help us grant more magical wishes and bring hope to children and families who need it most. We couldn’t be prouder to have her as an Ambassador.”
