Who can apply for a wish?

For a child to be eligible to have a wish granted by Rays of Sunshine, the child must:

  • Be currently living with a serious or life-limiting illness
  • Aged between 3 and 18 years of age upon application*
  • Be a UK resident
  • Not have had a wish granted by another wish granting charity or Rays of Sunshine in the past three years
  • Still be in active treatment or finished treatment within the last 3 years

*applications will be accepted until the day before the child’s 19th birthday

We will accept completed wish applications from:

  • Families on behalf of the child
  • From medical referrers, including Play Specialists, CLIC Sargent, social workers etc. on behalf of the family and child
  • From friends or relatives on behalf of the family and child who have the permission of the family to apply*

*We do ask that, due to GDPR data protection regulations, you ensure that you have the consent of the family to apply on their behalf.

What serious or life-threatening medical conditions qualify?

Every completed application is individually assessed by one of our medical advisors and considered on a case by case basis. We work closely with our team of professional medical advisors to ensure every wish we grant is suitable for the child and their condition.

What if I have had a wish before?

Rays of Sunshine will consider second wishes for children who have *not* had a wish granted by Rays of Sunshine, or another wish granting charity/organisation, within the past three (3) years.

A second wish is also subject to the following criteria:

  • All second wishes must be UK-based
  • We do not repeat wishes – for example, if the first wish was granted to have an iPad, we will not grant another wish for an iPad
  • A second wish will only be approved if our medical advisors deem that there has been a significant deterioration to the child’s condition or a change in the child’s prognosis and/ or diagnosis (e.g. diagnosed with another illness)

Every completed application is individually assessed by one of our medical advisors and considered on a case by case basis.

Wish applications will not be approved for anyone who has had a wish granted by Rays of Sunshine or another wish granting charity within the past three years. We work closely with other wish granting charities across the UK (full list here) to confirm if the child has ever had a wish granted before applying for a new wish with Rays of Sunshine.

What kind of wish could I have?

Wishes can be as unique as the children themselves and whether a child wants to be a princess or a fireman for the day, own an iPad, meet a favourite celebrity or even a ‘real life’ mermaid, Rays of Sunshine works hard to make that wish come true.

We categorise our wishes in to different ‘wish types’ – to go (UK only), to meet, to be, to have and at home experiences. The type of wish your child could be granted will be assessed on an individual basis by our medical advisors.

Find out more about our wish types below.

To meet

Examples include meeting your child’s favourite celebrity, footballer, popstar, children’s character, or YouTube star.

Due to popularity and availability of celebrities some meets and greets will be arranged as a group experience, rather than individual meet and greet.

To be

Whether your child wants to be a TFL tube driver, a Firefighter for a day, a Princess, a Superhero, a VIP for a day or even a Loch Ness Monster hunter. Rays of Sunshine will work hard to make your child’s imaginative wish become a reality

To Have

Examples include: to have an iPad, have a gaming laptop, have an iPhone or even a shopping spree.

Please note: We do not grant wishes to ‘own’ any living animals (e.g. to have a pet dog), to have any equipment deemed to be medical (e.g. hydrotherapy pools), or to have garden or room makeovers that require structural changes to be made – we will grant wishes for furniture and/or decoration (e.g. a wall mural)

At home experiences

Let us bring magical experiences to you at home! Examples include: Birthday parties, festivals, early Christmas, or Christmas experiences

All wish applications are assessed on their individual circumstances and the medical information provided on the form. We work closely with our team of professional medical advisors to ensure the wish is suitable for the child. We cannot guarantee what type of wish can be granted upon application and therefore encourage parents to put down three different types of special wishes.
