Who can apply for a wish?

For a child to be eligible to have a wish granted by Rays of Sunshine, the child must:

  • Be currently living with a serious or life-limiting illness
  • Aged between 3 and 18 years of age upon application*
  • Be a UK resident
  • Not had a previous wish from Rays of Sunshine or another wish granting charity

*applications will be accepted until the day before the child’s 18th birthday

We will accept completed wish applications from:

  • From medical referrers, including Play Specialists, Young Lives vs Cancer social workers etc. on behalf of the family and child*

*We do ask that, due to GDPR data protection regulations, you ensure that you have the consent of the family to apply on their behalf.

What serious or life-threatening medical conditions qualify?

Every completed application is individually assessed by one of our medical advisors and considered on a case by case basis. We work closely with our team of professional medical advisors to ensure every wish we grant is suitable for the child and their condition.

What if I have had a wish before?

As of the 1st July 2023, Rays of Sunshine will no longer be offering second wishes. Any child that has had a previous wish with either ourselves or another wish-granting organisation, will no longer be able to apply for a wish.

Any child that has had a wish with Rays of Sunshine in the past, will be able to join our Wish Community events – these events are free and accessible activities, both online and in-person across the UK. To find out more and check eligibility please click here.

What kind of wish could I have?

Wishes can be as unique as the children themselves and whether a child wants to be a princess or a fireman for the day, own an iPad, meet a favourite celebrity or even a ‘real life’ mermaid, Rays of Sunshine works hard to make that wish come true.

We categorise our wishes in to different ‘wish types’ – to go, to meet, to be, to have and at home experiences. The type of wish your child could be granted will be discussed once the wish has been approved. Our team of experienced Wish Granters will discuss the types of wishes available with the child and their family.

Find out more about our wish types below.

To meet

Examples include meeting your child’s favourite celebrity, footballer, popstar, children’s character, or YouTube star.

Due to popularity and availability of celebrities some meets and greets will be arranged as a group experience, rather than individual meet and greet.

To be

Whether your child wants to be a TFL tube driver, a Firefighter for a day, a Princess, a Superhero, a VIP for a day or even a Loch Ness Monster hunter. Rays of Sunshine will work hard to make your child’s imaginative wish become a reality

To Have

Examples include: to have an iPad, have a gaming laptop, have an iPhone or even a shopping spree.

Please note: We do not grant wishes to ‘own’ any living animals (e.g. to have a pet dog), to have any equipment deemed to be medical (e.g. hydrotherapy pools), or to have garden or room makeovers that require structural changes to be made – we will grant wishes for furniture for a bedroom makeover.

At home experiences

Let us bring magical experiences to you at home! Examples include: Birthday parties, festivals, early Christmas, or Christmas experiences

Apply

All wish applications are assessed on their individual circumstances and the medical information provided on the form. We cannot guarantee what type of wish can be granted upon application, this is discussed once the wish has been approved. We encourage the child to think of three different types of special wishes which will be discussed with our team of Wish Granters to determine the best way to deliver the experience.
