Meet Louie

According to his mum, eight-year-old Louie is a bright and determined young boy. “He definitely knows what he wants,” says mum Rachel. “He’s very bright, very clever and just so creative.”

Louie lives with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The condition affects every part of his life, and even routine tasks require extra time, energy and care. Alongside school, he manages daily physiotherapy, medication and regular hospital appointments.

“Everything takes a little bit longer and is more tiring for him,” said Rachel. “By the time he gets home from school, he’s physically exhausted. But he’s so clever and loves learning, he still wants to carry on.”

Why Louie chose his wish

Louie has been a huge fan of gaming since he was very young. Even when his body is tired, Louie takes comfort in gaming.

Louie also loves watching his favourite gaming YouTubers. Watching their videos has become part of his daily routine – a way to relax and wind down, particularly after difficult days. His favourite creator is Minecraft player Slogo.

“He’s loved him for as long as I can remember,” says Rachel. When Louie was offered the opportunity to have a wish granted through Rays of Sunshine, meeting his favourite creator felt like the perfect choice.

Even before the day of his wish, Rachel described it as a “truly life-changing” experience for Louie.

“It was something amazing for him to look forward to,” she says. “It gave him a real focus and a huge lift during everything else he deals with.”

The day itself 

Louie’s dream became reality when he met Slogo and some of his fellow content creators, and they all sat down to play Minecraft.

From the moment they met, Louie was made to feel completely welcome and included.

“They couldn’t have made him feel more special,” Rachel said. “They had so much time for him and really made Louie feel part of the gang.”

One of Rachel’s favourite moments was seeing Louie interact so naturally with people he had previously only watched on screen.

Louie spent time playing Minecraft, chatting and laughing with Slogo and his friends, creating memories that he and his family will treasure forever. Slogo even gave Louie a tour of his studio, where he makes the videos Louie finds so entertaining.

The impact of the wish

Louie continues to talk about his wish and proudly displays reminders of the experience in his bedroom, including a special poster gifted to him by Slogo during the day.

“He’s so proud of it,” Rachel says. “We’ve got it displayed above his bed so he can see it every day.”

Rachel says his wish has provided Louie with lasting confidence and joy, giving him a positive memory to hold onto during more challenging days.

“It’s had a massive impact,” Rachel explains. “He still talks about it all the time. It gave him something really special and something he’ll carry with him forever.

“When he’s dealing with everyday life and medical things, having something like this just brightens everything.

“It was honestly once in a lifetime,” Rachel says. “He’ll never forget it.”
