17-year-old Joe meets Rory McIlroy, Kevin Pieterson, Ben Stokes & other sporting heroes with Rays of Sunshine

Sport-fanatic Joe met lots of his sporting idols at the BMW PGA Championship

Yesterday, 17-year-old Joe Lunn, from Mitcham, had his greatest wish granted to meet his idol, golfing legend Rory McIlroy, thanks to Rays of Sunshine and Modest Golf Management founders, Niall Horan and Mark McDonnell. Not only did the teenager get to meet the professional golf player at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, he also spent time with England Cricket star Ben Stokes, his teammate Jos Butler, cricketing genius Kevin Pieterson, popstar Niall Horran, and pro-golfers Tommy Fleetwood and Danny Willett and many more.

17-year-old Joe is currently battling Metastic Synovial Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that affects the abdomen, lung, chest and groin. Due to this, Joe is undergoing six cycles of chemotherapy. Despite this, Joe is an extremely resilient, positive and happy teenager who absolutely loves sports and has still managed to play a few games for his beloved Sutton Cricket Club during treatment. He is captain of his school cricket team and played for Surrey County Cricket Club at district level, played rugby to a senior school level and is a spectator of many kinds of sports, with the uncanny ability to know players by just their kit or sponsors!

Rays of Sunshine, with the help of Modest Golf Management Founders, Niall Horan and Mark McDonnell, made Joe’s wish to meet Rory come true at the BMW PGA Championship. Joe believed he was being treated to a simple day of golf but was later surprised to a meet and greet with his idol along with an abundance of other sporting heroes, with whom he chatted to and took pictures with. This included his favourite cricketer Jos Buttler who plays in the same position as him, Buttler kindly gave Joe a signed glove that he wore during the game.

After his wish, Joe said:

Thank you so much Rays of Sunshine. I couldn’t have asked for anything more, it was an amazing day and such a great experience for me and my family.”

Before his wish, Joe’s Mum Antonietta said:

“Words will never be able to express the gratitude we have for you all. You will never know what these experiences mean to us and to see his face tomorrow will make all this pain just that little bit more bearable even if it’s for just one day. As with all the families you help, seeing your child go through hell and back hurts like no other pain imaginable. There is no end to how far you guys go to making our young people feel so special.”

Following the wish event, Rays of Sunshine CEO Jane Sharpe commented:

“We cannot thank Niall and Mark enough for helping us grant such a sensational wish for Joe and enabling him to meet his idol, Rory McIlroy. It was truly a spectacular day for Joe and his family. We’re so grateful to everyone who helped make Joe feel like a true VIP on the day and spent time with him.”
