BBC TEEN AWARD WINNER SHAWN MENDES TOOK TO THE STAGE FOR THE STAR-STUDDED RAYS OF SUNSHINE CHILDREN’S CHARITY CONCERT HOSTED BY RADIO DJ’S GEORGE SHELLEY AND LILAH PARSONS
Fresh from winning a BBC Radio 1 Teen Award for Best International Solo Artist and Best Single for Stitches yesterday, Shawn shared the stage with fellow Teen Award Nominees DNCE who rocked the stage at The SSE Arena, Wembley with their huge hit Cake by the Ocean.
One of the most poignant performances of the night came from The Rays of Sunshine Children’s Wish Choir, a group of 14 seriously ill children, who were joined on stage by international popstar and X Factor judge, Nicole Scherzinger for a show-stopping and moving rendition of Ain’t no Mountain High Enough. Also performing were Fleur East, Conor Maynard, Louisa Johnson, Lawson, Jamie Raven and James TW.
The event was hosted by Rays of Sunshine Children’s Charity www.raysofsunshine.org.uk which grants wishes to seriously ill children across the UK and supported by leading energy company SSE in a new two year partnership. SSE’s support of event enabled the charity to offer 2,000 complimentary tickets to seriously ill children who have previously had wishes granted.
Jane Sharpe, CEO of Rays of Sunshine Children’s Charity, said:
“The event was more sensational than we could have ever hoped. Looking out onto the audience and seeing so many of our wish families enjoying the show certainly made all the hard work worthwhile. We are so grateful to each and every one of the artists for giving up their time to perform and to SSE for supporting the event and making it possible for us to allow so many of our beneficiaries to attend.”
Colin Banks, Head of Sponsorship & Reward at SSE, said:
“At SSE we are proud to make a difference and are delighted that our support of tonight’s concert has helped Rays of Sunshine to hold their first event at The SSE Arena, Wembley. The performances were electric and it was brilliant to host over 5,000 people to celebrate the amazing work Rays of Sunshine do to brighten up the lives of seriously ill children across the UK.
The brave and inspiring people in attendance were truly heart-warming and we leave the show tonight filled with admiration for the work Rays of Sunshine does. SSE can’t wait to welcome the Sunshine Concert back to The SSE Arena, Wembley again next year. We are honoured to be able play our part.“
SSE has been the title sponsor of The SSE Arena, Wembley since June 2014. The energy company is also title sponsor of The SSE Arena, Belfast, The SSE Hydro (Glasgow)and The SSE Swalec (Cardiff).
