Rays of Sunshine grants Wakefield boy’s greatest wish to meet U.S Hockey Team, the Boston Bruins
A 12-year-old, from Wakefield, had his greatest wish granted when he got to skate with the Boston Bruins Ice Hockey Team and meet his idol, Zdeno Chara, thanks to Rays of Sunshine Children’s Charity.
Liam is currently living with Cystic Fibrosis and his biggest passion is for ice hockey. Liam has been playing the sport in Wakefield for five years and supports the Boston Bruins team.
In his application for a wish, Liam wrote “I love ice hockey as I love to play and it really helps me to try and keep my lung function high. I practise as much as I can on the ice and when I am at home I practise my skills as much as I can.
“I would absolutely love to go and meet the Boston Bruins team and most importantly would like to practise with them on the ice. This would be something to remember for the rest of my life.”
To make his dream of playing with the team become a reality, Rays of Sunshine enlisted the help of the Boston Bruins and organised for Liam and his family to travel to Boston for a very special Boston Bruins game.
Upon arrival to the ice, Liam’s idol, Zdeno Chara presented him very own with a personalised Boston Bruins shirt. He then got the chance to skate with the team before practice and lead the players in a post-practice skate. He also sat in Chara’s locker stall and fielded questions from the media, like a true pro!
Commenting whilst answering press, Liam said:
“Chara was really nice to me, so were all the players. It was if I’d known him forever. If you don’t know him, he looks really scary, but if you spend one minute with him, then he’s really nice.”
“It was neat to see Liam come in here and ask to meet Zdeno and the rest of the team. It was nice for us to be able to give him that opportunity to spend some time with us,”
added Bruins’ coach Claude Julien.
After his wish, Liam’s mum, Jayne, added:
“Liam is just beaming. Thank you Rays of Sunshine, Boston Bruins, Zdeno Chara and the rest of the Bruins players for making this possible for Liam. Thank you for making it such an incredible experience. We are so appreciative. You have made his wish come true.”
